Diet: Why the Best Diet Is the One You Can Stick To

If you've ever searched online for the "perfect diet," you've probably come across keto, intermittent fasting, low-carb, paleo, carnivore, vegan, and countless other approaches. The truth is, there isn't one diet that works for everyone.
At Surrey Mobile Personal Trainers, we believe the best diet is the one that fits your lifestyle, supports your goals, and is sustainable for the long term.
What Is a Healthy Diet?
A healthy diet provides your body with the nutrients it needs to function properly. It should include a balance of:
Lean protein such as chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yoghurt, tofu, and beans.
Wholegrain carbohydrates like oats, brown rice, potatoes, and wholemeal bread.
Healthy fats from foods such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.
Plenty of fruit and vegetables for vitamins, minerals, and fibre.
Adequate water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Rather than eliminating entire food groups, focus on balance and portion control.
Calories Matter
Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain, or maintaining your weight, calorie
balance plays a major role.
To lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn.
To gain muscle, you generally need a small calorie surplus alongside strength training.
To maintain your weight, calorie intake should roughly match calorie expenditure.
This doesn't mean you need to obsessively count every calorie forever, but understanding how much you're eating can be incredibly helpful.
Protein Is Essential
Protein helps repair muscle tissue, supports recovery after exercise, and keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
Aim to include a source of protein with every meal. Good options include:
Chicken breast
Turkey
Fish
Eggs
Greek yoghurt
Cottage cheese
Lean beef
Tofu
Lentils
Beans
For many active adults, consuming around 1.2–2.0g of protein per kilogram of body weight each day is a good target.
Don't Fear Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates have developed an unfair reputation over the years. In reality, they are your body's preferred energy source.
Choosing complex carbohydrates such as oats, potatoes, wholegrain rice, and wholemeal pasta provides long-lasting energy and helps fuel workouts and everyday activities.
The key is eating the right amount for your activity level rather than cutting them out completely.
Healthy Fats Are Important Too
Healthy fats support hormone production, brain function, and overall health.
Include moderate amounts of:
Olive oil
Nuts
Seeds
Avocados
Oily fish like salmon and mackerel
Like everything else, moderation is key.
Avoid Extreme Diets
Crash diets often promise rapid weight loss, but they're usually difficult to maintain and can leave you feeling tired, hungry, and frustrated.
Instead of aiming to lose weight as quickly as possible, focus on building habits you can maintain for years.
Small, consistent improvements almost always beat short-term extremes.
Meal Planning Makes Success Easier
One of the biggest reasons people struggle with their diet is a lack of preparation.
Simple habits can make a huge difference:
Plan your meals in advance.
Keep healthy snacks available.
Shop with a grocery list.
Prepare lunches the night before.
Avoid shopping when you're hungry.
When healthy choices are convenient, you're far more likely to stick to them.
Stay Hydrated
Many people mistake thirst for hunger.
Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're exercising regularly. Proper hydration supports energy levels, concentration, digestion, and physical performance.
Progress Over Perfection
You don't need to eat perfectly every day to achieve fantastic results.
Enjoy meals out, birthdays, holidays, and treats without guilt. One meal won't make or break your progress—your overall habits matter far more than occasional indulgences.
Consistency beats perfection every time.
